Farming Essences has always been a core currency generation method in Path of Exile, and with the release of Dawn of the Hunt in PoE 2, the mechanic has been rebalanced. The new expansion adds more passives, updates old ones, and introduces additional synergy between mechanics like Rogue Exiles, Strongboxes, Spirits, and of course, Essences. But the real question is: Are Essences worth farming in 0.2? Let's break it down with real testing, analysis, and strategy.
To truly assess the potential profitability of Essences in PoE 2 Dawn of the Hunt, we opted for a full commitment to the Essence-related passives on the Atlas Tree.
By focusing every available point toward maximizing Essence spawn rates and enhancing the quality of the drops, the goal was to see whether this investment could result in consistent, high-value returns.
Below is a breakdown of the key elements of the optimized PoE 2 Dawn of the Hunt Essence Atlas Tree setup:
The core of the strategy was stacking as many passives as possible that directly increased the chance for Essences to spawn on maps.
These passives are essential because they directly influence how often Essences will appear during the course of the map, which is critical for any farming strategy relying on Essences for profit.
By prioritizing these nodes, I ensured a high base chance for Essences, allowing for more frequent encounters with this mechanic.
Essence Chance: Every Essence Chance node offers a percentage boost to the likelihood of an Essence appearing on your map, and by maxing these out, the foundation of the Essence farm was built.
Goal: Get Essences to spawn reliably on every map, so you’re consistently engaging with the mechanic.
This node was a key choice for scaling the profitability of the Essences encountered.
Energetic Resonance focuses on enhancing the value of specific Essence types: Attack, Chaos, Physical, and Speed.
These are considered high-value Essences because they are in high demand and can yield substantial PoE 2 Currency when sold.
Prioritizing High-Value Essences: Focus was put on ensuring that the more valuable Essences would spawn more frequently, turning the mechanic into a potentially profitable one, rather than simply increasing spawn rate across the board.
Result: Greater frequency of high-value Essences like Chaos Essences and Physical Essences, which tend to have better market prices.
These two passives work in tandem to improve the chances of encountering Corrupted Essences—a highly sought-after variant that can yield even better value when corrupted.
The idea was to maximize the possibility of obtaining Greater or Corrupted Essences, which have the potential to sell for much higher prices compared to standard ones.
Resonant Lattice: This passive focuses on the likelihood of corrupting Essences you encounter, giving them a higher chance of being Greater or Corrupted versions.
Harmonic Corruption: This passive provides an additional opportunity to corrupt Essences, stacking the potential for double corruption.
Result: More chances for Greater and Corrupted Essences, which are more profitable than the standard variants.
One of the standout choices in the setup, Crystalline Growth offers a massive +100% Essence spawn chance.
This node is a game-changer, doubling the chance for Essences to spawn on a map and directly boosting the overall frequency of Essence encounters.
Impact: With this passive, you get a substantial increase in the overall yield of Essences per map, directly contributing to your farming efficiency.
Result: Increased spawn rate of Essences, maximizing the potential for loot drops.
These two synergistic nodes were added to further enhance the Essence farm. Azmeri's Spirits grants a +20% increased chance for Essences to spawn, stacking well with the other Essence Chance nodes.
Meanwhile, Merging Worlds offers synergy with the Spirit mechanics in PoE 2, meaning any additional Essence-related mechanics will benefit from this increase as well.
Azmeri's Spirits: A significant Essence spawn chance boost that directly increases the odds of encountering Essences on your maps.
Merging Worlds: Adds synergy with Spirits, providing bonuses that help increase the value and frequency of spawnable Essences, especially when linked with other spirit or corruption-related mechanics.
Result: These nodes enhanced both the frequency of Essences and the potential synergies between other mechanics, further boosting farm efficiency.
With all of the above nodes combined, the final passive bonus came to a substantial 280% increased chance to contain Essences per map.
This made it incredibly likely that any given map would feature one or more Essences, improving the overall efficiency of the farm.
High Spawn Rate: The combined effect of all these bonuses meant that virtually every map would feature at least one Essence, often more. This high spawn rate is essential for maximizing profitability, as it allows for continuous interaction with the mechanic without excessive downtime.
Result: With this setup, Essence farming became a consistently reliable mechanic, increasing the chances of profitable drops while reducing the reliance on RNG.
With a fully invested Atlas tree and no tower buffs, we ran 50 maps to see baseline Essence profitability.
Here's the breakdown:
Essences Found: 48 total
Greater Essences: 4
Corrupted Essences: 0 (despite vaaling every essence drop)
Profit: ~28 Exalted Orbs total
Top Drop: A single Greater Essence worth 12 Exalts
Essences spawned consistently, often once per map. But profits were wildly inconsistent and most Essences were low value. Only one high-value drop carried the profit.
To test tower synergy, another 20 maps were run using Tower Tablets with Essence Buffs active.
The final Essence spawn chance in-map reached 600%.
Essences Found: 24 total
Greater Essences: 2
Corrupted Essences: 0 again
Profit: ~14 Exalted Orbs total
Despite double the chance to spawn, profit dropped significantly. The tower buffs slightly increased essence quantity, but quality and value remained stagnant.
Across 70 total maps:
Total Profit: 42 Exalted Orbs
Average Profit per Map: ~0.6 Exalts
Total Essences Found: ~72 (averaging 1+ per map)
Corrupted Essences: 0
The data shows that Essences spawn reliably, especially with tower support.
But they simply don’t hold value in the current economy.
Most drops are vendor-tier, and corrupted variants—the true profit-makers—feel bugged or absurdly rare.
Right now, demand for Essences is rock-bottom.
Many of the ones farmed (like Essence of Body or Battle) are hard to sell and move for cheap bulk rates.
Only a handful (like Essence of Haste) are worth a meaningful amount.
Oversupply with little demand
Corrupted Essences not dropping reliably
High Atlas Tree investment with minimal return
No, not as a main strategy.
After testing Essences extensively with different setups in Dawn of the Hunt, the verdict is clear: Essences aren't worth dedicating your Atlas tree to as a primary farming method.
Here's why:
Decent Spawn Rates, But Low Profitability
While Essences spawn consistently—especially when fully investing in Essence-focused Atlas passives and using tower buffs—the return on investment remains low. Even with a solid setup (like the 280% increased chance for Essences), the overall currency return is underwhelming. The market for Essences is currently too slow, and many of the drops are low-value or unsellable, leading to disappointing profits.
Essences Are More of a Supplementary Mechanic
Essences are more effective as a side mechanic to bolster your profits when running high-juice content, rather than a core farming strategy. They can be added to an already profitable Atlas tree without completely disrupting your farming routine, but relying on them as your main source of income won’t yield great results.
Tower Buffs Don't Provide a Game-Changing Advantage
Even with 600% increased Essence spawn chance from tower buffs, the results didn't justify the added effort. The quantity of Essences did increase slightly, but the quality and value of the drops stayed the same. This leads to the unfortunate reality that Essences, even with the tower buffs, don’t produce the high-end returns you’d expect from such an investment.
Corrupted Essences Are Too Rare
One of the biggest selling points of Essences—Corrupted Essences—were virtually non-existent in both tests. Despite using Vaal orbs to corrupt every Essence, not a single Corrupted Essence dropped. This makes it much harder to turn a significant profit from the mechanic, as Corrupted Essences are usually the most valuable drops.
Here's what Ronarray has to say:
Essences are consistent, but the profits just don’t scale. If you're hunting high-value currency, consider alternatives like Strongboxes, Abyss, or Shrine stacking with map mods and value modifiers. You can check out our PoE 2 Dawn of the Hunt Best and Fastest Early Currency Farm.
Stay tuned, and good luck out there, Exile. The hunt continues!
